FRACTURE MECHANICS
"Standard" terfenol-d has a measured compressive strength of -805+/-34 MPa (117+/-5 ksi), a tensile strength of 28 MPa, and a bending strength of about 40 MPa.

Hardened caps bonded to rod ends have proven to make it more rugged.
In 2023, 20 test specimens were crushed. Each specimen was a right circular cylinder of terfenol-d sandwiched between two hardened end caps bonded on with a compliant bonding agent. Crucially, the alloy and its two end caps were the same diameter, 12.3mm. Terfenol-d length was 10mm and each end cap 8mm for a total specimen length of 26mm.
Qualitatively, it was observed that the relatively low Young's modulus of the alloy enabled storage of significant energy which manifested as a shower of molten ejecta at failure.
Crush strength was measured to be near the range of 805+/-34 MPa (117+/-5 ksi).
