SUPERIOR DIESEL FUEL INJECTION
Electromechanical actuators operate diesel fuel injectors. Superior fuel injection requires an actuator that is both capable* and durable.
Actuator Types
- Solenoid. Vintage 1913, injectors still use solenoids to port high pressure fuel to only open or close the injector needle. Solenoid injectors are durable.
- Piezoelectric Ceramic. The many benefits of a piezoelectric actuator directly operating a needle may be found here. Piezoelectric injectors are capable.
- Magnetostrictve. Figure 6 of US Patent 9,903,326 "Fuel injector having a magnetostrictive actuator device" describes one such device. This magnetostrictive injector is durable.
QCW offers to develop a magnetostrictive actuator to operate a diesel fuel injector. Key characteristics unique to terfenol-d enable it to be both capable and durable:
Engine operation benefits include:
- More fuel economy
- Less emissions
- Fuel flexibility
- Less knock
- Retrofittable
- Any combination of the above
*A capable fuel injector could implement Carnot's maxim: heat not used to expand matter is wasted. For a piston engine, Rudolf Diesel distilled this as: admit the combustible gradually. This requires the injector nozzle size to be variable, not fixed. Interestingly, Diesel himself observed: "during the easy running of the engine, one can scarcely perceive the beginnings of the power stroke." In other words, it was quiet.
