• Carnot, S., Reflections on the Motive Power of Fire Dover Publications, Inc., 1988. In 1824, Sadi Carnot wrote the basic thermodynamics of how best to convert heat into work. Paraphrasing: "Heat not used to expand matter is wasted."

• Diesel, R. Theory and Construction of a Rational Heat Motor Spon & Chamberlain, 1894. Rudolf Diesel wrote the implementation of Carnot's theory for a piston engine. Paraphrasing: "Admit the combustible gradually."
  
  
• Diesel, R. Diesel's Rational Heat Motor. A Lecture by Rudolf Diesel. Progressive Age Publishing Company, 1897. Strikingly, Rudolf Diesel observed that his test engine was quiet.
  
  
• Chilowsky, et al U.S. Patent 1,471,547 "Production of Submarine Signals And The Location Of Submarine Objects," October 23, 1923. Constantin Chilowsky and Paul Langevin (assistant to Pierre Curie) invented a piezoelectric sonar projector operating at 50 kHz to 200 kHz. The significance of this device is it uses one of two methods, piezoelectric versus magnetostrictive, to obtain power and power density. The inventors were Paris residents who filed the patent May 19, 1917.
