CONTROL METHOD FEATURES

Many kinds of dynamic systems produce unwanted effects such as ringing, harmonics, or possible impact. Ringing and harmonics may result in time delays while accommodating the effects of impact makes an object bulkier and consumes operating and maintenance/repair costs.

QCW's "soft start" control method was originally developed for and tested against a magnetostrictive actuator directly operating an injector needle for high speed rate shaping diesel fuel injection. This was necessitated by the unacceptable ringing and impact potential as shown in the original proof of speed demonstrator. This variation of the control method features rapid positioning without ringing, harmonics, or possible impact. The control method can be varied to suit desired and/or optimum operation such as
  • To drive a load at its natural resonant frequency.

  • To sense and follow changing load dynamics.

  • And, vice versa, precise control can counter unwanted dynamics.

QCW's control method applies to entire classes of devices and industries. For instance:
  • Digital communications.

  • Variable frequency drives.

  • Imaging, such as for seismic or medical purposes.

  • Rolling blackout suppression.

  • Electrical power quality.

  • Excavator buckets.

  • Hydraulic system water hammer mitigation.

  • Etc.
